大卫·豪勒（DavidHaller），X教授查尔斯的儿子，小时候就被诊断出患有人格分裂+精神分裂症，他一生大部分时间都是在精神病医院进进出出。而凡夫俗子的医生却把大卫的这种症状看作是医学界常见的精神疾病。实际上，大卫的这种“精神疾病”是一种超能力，由多重人格产生的超能力，他的每一重人格都拥有一种能力或特质，因而得名“大群”。另外，大卫的超能力，部分原因来自于遗传其父亲查尔斯的X基因，再加上寄生于其精神面中的变种人影王的影响，使得大卫的超能力得以觉醒。
