故事的舞台是一个叫“Chuggington”的小镇，那里住着各种各样的火车。英语的“Chuggchugg”相当于日语的“Shushupopo”，将“chugg”和“town（小镇）”组合成“Chuggington”，也就是小镇名字的由来。在这里住着许多火车，他们和人类一起生活一起从事各种各样的工作。主人公是住在这个小镇上的小见习火车3人组，他们是“威尔逊(Wilson)”、“可可(Koko)”和“布鲁斯特(Brewster)”。故事描述了生活在Chuggington镇的3人，在火车前辈的指导下经历各种各样的事情，一起欢笑难过，一起成长的过程，既让人轻松愉悦，也不乏温馨感动。
