1915年，中国著名的民间工艺品江南“辜绣”，第一次入选巴拿马万国博览会，时值辛亥革命前后，见证了“绣娘”这一社会阶层在新旧两个时代的传承与发展。本剧反映的正是这样一个励志故事。 光绪年间，江南辜仙芝绣庄已是方圆百里赫赫有名的世袭刺绣大家，成为专为王室提供御品的“御绣户”，邻近辜家的樊家也是一个大名鼎鼎的“御绣户”，两家之间在绣艺界的地位相互争斗由来已久。 辜家为了传宗接代，私下将媳妇戴莲芸所生女儿与沈家所生男孩调了包，女孩取名沈兰馨，男孩取名辜传铭。 十五年后，沈兰馨，辜传铭成了两小无猜的一对，此时朝廷派李公公来选绣女与绣品，辜家为了保存颜面，让兰馨替代辜家孙女潇潇作为辜家人入了宫。同时，樊家女儿樊绿珠也应征入选。传铭则继续留在辜家，接受养父辜松圃严苛的教育，以继承家业。而兰馨的沈家哥哥沈涛，一心向往革命，已经给自己的人生定下了目标，所以对于潇潇的爱恋也视若罔闻。
