在东京都内，发生了在遗体上留下“X”痕迹的杀人事件。本应负责案件的刑警·安堂源次（安田显饰）被排除在搜查之外。因为和以前自己的妻子成为受害者的连续杀人一样的犯人的可能性很高。因此，搜查本部向被称为天才科学家的神保仁（田中圭饰）请求协助搜查。神保对事件的解决毫无兴趣。源次被那个异想天开的行动和言行弄得团团转。但是两人渐渐开始合拍。然后，两人孤独的DNA搜查，发现了搜查本部也没有发现的“某个痕迹”。在这种情况下，发生了“杀人鬼X”更进一步的杀人事件…。
电影剧本会由侯孝贤和朱天文以及阿城帮忙打造，目前定下的演员只有舒淇和张震，金城武、浅野忠信等人也在接洽中。《聂隐娘》对侯孝贤的最大挑战是商业诉求，他的作品除了出道时候的喜剧片和少数几个片子，其他无一例外丧失了本岛市场，只能走上无奈的国际影展路线。侯孝贤如何在商业导向的压力下保持个人风格以及创作自由，他能作出何等改变将是一大看点。此外由于杨德昌没能完成北宋的追风少年（资金缺口太大），侯孝贤梦回唐朝的侠女传奇更是多出一番意义。
