《远古入侵：新世界》是加拿大与英国合拍的《远古入侵》（Primeval）衍生剧（Primeval: New World），二者除了基础设定相同之外，故事情节完全不同。

本剧以吉川英治的《宫本武藏》做为原作，原作原本只写到岩流岛决斗而已，而本剧则是在后半部份衍生出岩流岛以后的故事。在岩流岛决斗的那一集，用了三十台摄影机，尝试制作出特殊的效果。，又请来颜尼欧・莫利克奈作音乐，喧腾一时，极有话题性。但是开演之后，收视率每况愈下，到后来可说欲振乏力。包括女主角米仓凉子等演员与编剧镰田敏夫等人，将整出戏包装得像是偶像剧一般，而这也正是前一出大河剧“利家与松”被批评诟病的部份所在。 本剧在播出期间也制造出一些负面的新闻：在第一集里的强盗袭击场面被认为有抄袭黑泽明导演的电影“七武士”之嫌，因此在全剧播毕之后，由黑泽制作公司提出著作权遭侵害的告诉，不过黑泽公司败诉。其次是剧中角色吉野太夫脱衣向宫本武藏献身，这一幕遭到部分艺文界人士抗议，认为身为文化人的吉野太夫不该被演成如此不堪的女性。此外在演员的方面，男主角市川新之助被爆出与一名女歌手有私生女的丑闻，并且又和女主角米仓凉子因戏结缘相恋，也着实热闹了一阵子。
特勤第八组是尖刀部队，成员各个身手不凡。在与“血狼”数次交锋中，化解了多次恐怖袭击，但也经历了沉重的流血和牺牲，曾经懵懂无知的女孩们成长起来，成为了真正的特勤战士。直到最终将恶贯满盈的恐怖分子击毙，击溃了国际恐怖组织的阴谋。捍卫了祖国荣誉，守护人民的安康。
